Check the trim under the windscreen wiper that extends partly up the windscreen. The locating pegs lock into holes that may have become dislodged, letting water in.

A badly bonded windscreen is certainly a possibility but check the scuttle drains under wiper linkage in either corner, also remove screws from the rear end of the front wheel arch liners, pull the liner out as this area also gets blocked with leaves and rubbish, also sun roof (if fitted) drain tubes can get blocked or disconnected.

I have a 12 year old Ghia with a similar problem. I had a massive amount of water in the driver's footwell. I have checked out the sunroof drain and scuttle drain. Both were at least partially blocked and are now flowing freely. The tip to get at them by removing the wheel-arch cover (9 torq screws) was a good one (there is a unit under the wheel arch which also has to be moved aside - loosen 2 bolts). I checked out the trim by the windscreen wiper and this too was loose - it is not any more. I don't understand though how this could be a cause, because as far as I can see, water is SUPPOSED to drain into the scuttle (to avoid the engine compartment) and then out through the scuttle drain. Then, having removed the carpet and some of the internal trim I spent a few days and many newspapers drying things off.

But after all this, water is still getting in. It seems to seep in through the front, downward sloping bit of the footwell, near the control pedals. It happens when there is prolonged rain. I cannot see it coming in anywhere when I play a jet-washer all over the car. My theory is that even with the scuttle drain free, water can somehow seep down the back behind the scuttle.

It is difficult to see what is going on because underneath the carpet is a big semi-rigid insulating/sound-proofing pad which extends over both footwells. I can lift up one side to look underneath but that's as far as I can move it. In order to remove it, it looks as if I would have to take out the heating duct from between the 2 front seats, the heater itself and lord knows what else. So I'm minded just to cut out the driver's side section with a Stanley knife in order to have a look. Though I'm not sure what I could do next to stop the leak even if I located it - if my theory is right, I'd have to somehow get at that panel from the other side.

Any advice chaps?
